Have written service manual for knuck and pan.."Mechanics & Owners Guide to 1941-1959 Harley Davidson O.H.V. Big Twins" ISBN 0-9672744-0-0. Available through, Kick-Start M/C Parts (616) 245-8991, or the Antique Motorcycle Club (june) quarterly. Plasti-coil bound....the book lays flat. Expensive....was expensive to make. Solid lifter valve adjustment, (in-frame) rocker cover gasket replacement..... this service manual will not interest anyone without a 1936-1964 Big Twin. A "No Returns"(except for damaged books) policy....( I'd rather stack the books along the interior walls of our house to use as insulation next winter, than have a book "orphaned" by a non-rider and left sitting in the shelf of their library. We want folks to build a knuckle or pan from the ground up..(which will cost twice as much as a 2000 Dyna-Glide..unless you have a local dealer that will cut you a skid on the retail price of a jillion seperate parts). I built my '59 Glide from swap meet junk and a complete '58 pan motor from the Tedd Cycle catalog, so i know it can be done [with enough time and money thrown at it]. Just be prepared to spend a couple of years sitting on your motionless hobby-horse wondering if it will ever run. Just remember the motors have to be built excact (every shaft hole line-bored and lapped raced). I had an incorrectly built motor the first's what will happen....the motor will run fine for 5000 miles and then start knocking (from the every increasing eccentricity of your pinion shaft), and then you'll be motorless for another 18 months. Here's a tip.....any time you hear a mechanic tell you...."Aw...Harley didn't know what they wuz doing when they said do this or that". When you hear that it means your mechanic loves his work so much that he never went to MMI to learn anything, and he'd rather blow smoke at you than admit he doesn't know what he's talking about. The motor and who built it, is everything. Ask your mechanic/builder this question..." Do you have a Sunnen hone with a keyway arbor? If the six-stone sunnen hone is not available, then there is no way a person can push a set of crankcases (tandem bore) on to the mandrel without the cases rocking and thusly bell-mouthing the bore. Any comments? I will try to briefly answer any questions i can, but i do not build my own motors. I cannot answer any hop-up questions. My material covers 74cu. in. (& 61 inch) motors only. (Big bore motors are not smooth driving machines. The back and forth lurching is physically wearing, and with knuckle and build the top end up the bottom end suffers, ditto for the bottom end build-up affecting the top end. Dig? later, kirk perry

Great site! As a motorcycle journalist (47) with a strong drive to research the early history of Harley-Davidson in the Netherlands and Belgium I'm wondering if somebody can help me giving me detailed information on the first exports of Harley-Davidsons to Europe. 1)When in 1913 was the agency contract signed with Duncan watson in London? 2) When was the first shipment sent to London? 3) Were - since 1913 - all shipments from Milwaukee always sent via their London office or were also direct shipments arranged? 4) How did Duncan Watson came in contact with prospect agent outside the UK? 5) Is it known in which countries he managed to sign contracts with H-D agents? Is it known when? 6) Does anybody know what happened with the archives of Duncan Watson? I'm really looking forward to hearing from you. Frank F. van Oortmerssen
